While both Nissan and Toyota have been investing heavily in the SUV market, that doesn't mean that they've been ignoring their bestsellers: the sedans. Both the Nissan Sentra and the Toyota Corolla are household names, and their 2022 iterations continue their legacy and rivalry.
Lee Nissan looks at these two iconic cars and sees which one has the upper hand this 2022. The focus will be on each car's performance, safety features, and interior.
The 2022 Sentra is easily the larger car, as the EPA designates it as a mid-size car. The 2022 Corolla, on the other hand, has been rated as a compact.
As such, the Sentra has more space for both passengers and cargo. The Sentra has 96 cubic feet of passenger volume, compared to only 88.6 for the Corolla. The driver and front passenger also enjoy significant front legroom, headroom, and shoulder room.
As for the trunk, the Sentra has 14.3 cubic feet of cargo space. The Corolla only has 13.1 cubic feet.
You can get 149 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque from the 2022 Sentra's 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder engine. By comparison, the 2022 Corolla's 1.8 DOHC 4-cylinder engine can produce a meager 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque.
The track is the width between the car's wheels; the wider it is, the better is the car’s stability and handling. The 2022 Sentra's track is 1.9 inches and 1.1 inches wider in the front and rear, respectively, compared to the Corolla's.
Aside from that, the 2022 Sentra is simply the faster vehicle, based on measurements conducted by Motor Trend. Zero to 60 miles per hour is achieved in only eight seconds in the Sentra, while it takes the Corolla 10.2 seconds to get to the same speed.
Comfort and performance are worthless if the car is not safe. In this regard, both cars implement modern safety features and systems. However, the 2022 Nissan Sentra adds a little bit of extra protection.
The 2022 Sentra has front passenger-side knee airbags, a feature that is often overlooked but could prove crucial in case of a collision. It prevents the driver and front passengers from sliding during impact and stops their legs from hitting the dashboard. This feature is not available in the 2022 Corolla.
As is with many Nissan models, the 2022 Sentra SR trim has an optional Around View® Monitor, which helps the driver see the car from different angles, including the rear and sides. The 2022 Corolla only has a rear monitor as part of its safety features.
Aside from these, crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have deemed the 2022 Sentra as the safer vehicle. It's proven to have a lower risk of injury for both front and side crashes.
Both Sentra and Corolla are great cars; the millions of units sold over the years can attest to that. However, it's hard to ignore that for this year's iterations; the Sentra is the better car. Whether it's interior space, performance, or safety features, the 2022 Nissan Sentra is out in front.
