Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are all-electric. Their powertrains consist of at least one motor positioned on the front or rear axle and a battery pack, instead of an engine and a gas tank. PHEVs are a middle ground that, in simplest terms, have both a gasoline powertrain (engine and gas tank) and a small electric powertrain (motor and battery) that are merged together. This setup allows drivers to use electric power when they want to and gasoline power when they need to. Most PHEVs have three driving modes, gas only, electric only, and hybrid. They can typically travel solely on electric power for 30 to 40 miles and when the battery needs to be replenished it can be charged in the same manner that you would charge a BEV. You’ll likely still visit the gas pump regularly but depending on your daily commute and charging habits you’ll be able to reduce the number of times you need to fill up.
Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) combine a gas-powered engine, electric motor, and battery. Unlike PHEVs, however, the battery in an HEV is solely replenished through regenerative braking. While they lack an electric-only mode, HEVs typically exhibit notable enhancements in fuel efficiency and emit fewer tailpipe emissions compared to conventional gas-powered vehicles.
